New Camera (Advice, Suggestions, Opinions)

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 13, 2005, 1:11 PM
I'm looking for a new camera. I have a Canon PowerShot A85, which isn't horrible, but it's more a family style/introductory SLR digital camera.

I'm really looking for something with a more professional look and feel. I want something with plenty of control so I can really experiment shooting manual.

I'm considering a Canon EOS 300D, a Fuji FinePix S2 Pro or a Konica Minolta DYNAX 7D / MAXXUM 7D.

I'd go with either the EOS 300D or the Konica Minolta. I favor the 300D over the Maxxum though for the slightly higher resolution 3072 x 2048 over the 3008 x 2000. Canon also seems like a more reliable brand, it's also cheaper. Although the Maxxum has one faster ISO I honeslty never use fast ISO becasue the extra noise makes shots look like shit. The reason I'm against the FinePix is because of the 15sec shutter speed. Both the Canon and Konica's have 30sec and Bulb. You can have a lot of fun with bulb as you can leave the shutter open for hours and give star trails a shot. Hope that helps.

Ooooh, that's what I'm looking for. Something with long long long exposure. Shitty PowerShot and its 15sec. :(

Canon EOS it is, I think... unless there's one I didn't list you'd suggest?

Unless I see something better in the future, my next camera would be the Canon EOS 300D too, so yeah get that one, it has great specs. 15sec exposures arn't bad at all though it's harder to find a situation where a super long exposure would be needed although It'd be fun to experiment with smaller apertures at longer exposures. I took three shots of star trails myself with the longest one at 3hrs. I used my Nikon N80 film camera and have to finish off the roll before getting them developed.

So with the EOS... it's got a max. shutter speed of 30 seconds... but you can extend that? Explain?

And what about the 20D? I'm looking into comparing the two... look similar, but the 20D is a little pricier... 300D sounds like it sacrificed features compared to the 10D in return for a lower cost...

Yes you can extend that by putting it on bulb where the shutter stays open as long as the the button is depressed. You can do this by tapeing the button down. To reduce camera shake when applying and removing the tape you cover the lens so the camera sees no light.

You're right the 20D and 300D are similar with the 20D having better features at a higher price. I don't know what kind of package you're looking at, but I'm seeing the 20D at $1419 with no lens and the 300D at $707 with no lens, that's quite a difference with another couple hundred dollars you have to spend on a lens. Depends on how much you're willing to spend.

One of my choices for a new camera was the Canon EOS 300D, too! I never did get one since i can't really afford it, but i think it's a nice choice. Minolta's a really good brand. My grandpa does amateur photography and he really likes his Minolta. I also have one too. They can take really good pictures, but i don't know anything about the specific model you're looking at. Hey, is Konika something they added later? Mine doesn't have Konika on it.
